I live in Vancouver, which is another city with a big film industry and I'd love to see a similar project recreating a lost version of this city hidden in the background of films. When I rewatch Keaton films, I now occasionally notice the distinctive fence boards outside Keaton's studio but that's about it. I'm not sure that I actually learned much from it and think you would have to have some existing knowledge of the city to retain many of the details. Buster Keatons swan song as an independent filmmaker (before being swallowed into the MGM assembly line) tears a page from Mark Twain and trims it to fit his own unique character, with the Great Stone Face playing the hapless son of a rough-and-tumble riverboat. Brighton ( My Tour of Europe by Teddy Roosevelt Age Ten ) follows the great silent actor and filmmaker Buster Keaton from his birth to vaudeville parents to his. He notices the alternating heights of palm trees and uses that as a starting point to piece together where a scene took place. These early Buster Keaton movies are always both fun and charming to watch. He points out an unusual staircase and finds the building that it belonged to. While his later classics often get all the press, many of these films are simply terrific and well worth your time. Joe and Myra were Vaudevillian comedians with a popular, ever-changing variety act, giving Keaton an eclectic and interesting upbringing. He does stuff like circle a vent off in the background of film still, point out that building in an old aerial photograph and then show where Keaton must have put his camera on a map. This is one of the most impressive books I have ever read.
